Is time the most precious thing in your life?
Time… Time is the one thing you will never ever get back in your life, and every time you look at your life, you realise life is short so… time, for me, is an asset that you are given at birth, like a pile of sand that inexorably flows out of your hands, flying away from you forever with each grain that leaves your hands. Or melting clocks like in Dali’s world
I was reflecting on this whilst planning my trip to Paris. I usually try to make time to see family or friends. In my previous job, I was in Paris about once to twice a year (now, every months). At that time, I didn’t understand why some of my friends could not find even one hour in their calendar, when it was the only time I would see them in one year…
Then I realised that the way you allocate your time is also a reflection of your priorities in life. Not your official priorities, but what matters enough to you that you will make time for it without thinking. So… I stopped getting frustrated and got on with my life, focusing on people able to make time for me, for the others… Well, they knew how to reach me if they really wanted to! This realisation was a bit of a cruel one, but it also helped me refocusing my time where it actually mattered.
Time… is not money. You can borrow money, you can give money, you can receive money… But you can’t borrow time, and you will certainly never get it back: once it is gone, it is GONE.
So think about it next time you tell someone you do not have time to see them. Is it genuinely the case? or is it because meeting with this particular friend is nice, but you have more “important” things going on? Are you sure you can’t handle the travel for that friend, or is that person more of an acquaintance rather than a friend, and their invite happen to be on the day you have to go to the swimming pool, or even… the day you normally have a shampoo?!
You have just made the time to go on Facebook, check my updates and click on this link to read this article… then you have time also to call this friend/family member you have meant to call for ages
So here’s your takeaway for today: Time. Is. Your. Most. Precious. Asset… Allocate it wisely.
